Inhibition of Colon Cancer Line Growth by Herbal Plants of the Ryukyu Islands

چکیده
There is increasing interest in the use of herbal products to maintain human health. Plants contain a wide variety of compounds that may have biological activities including anticancer effect (Boik, 2001). There are many kinds of herbal plants in the Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa, Japan. Some of them have been used for the treatment of patients who are affected with insomnia, severe infections, or enterocolitis in Okinawa from ancient times. Especially in women, Okinawa is known as one of longevity areas in Japan (Planning and information section, 2001), and lower incidence of cancer may contribute longer life span (Planning and information section, 2001). In a recent study, we found that the herbs Peucedanum japonicum and Terminalia catuppa that are widely distributed in Eastern Asian counties including the Ryukyu Islands inhibit the occurrence of aberrant crypt foci (ACF), known as putative preneoplastic lesions in rat colon carcinogenesis (Morioka et al., 2004; Morioka et al., 2005). Although the above-described Growth Inhibitory Activities of Crude Extracts Obtained from Herbal Plants in the Ryukyu Islands on Several Human Colon Carcinoma Cell Lines

Effect of valproic acid on JAK/STAT pathway, SOCS1, SOCS3, Bcl-xL, c-Myc, and Mcl-1 gene expression, cell growth inhibition and apoptosis induction in human colon cancer HT29 cell line.
Background and aim: Cytokines are a large family of protein messengers. These proteins induce various cellular responses. Janus kinases (JAKs) are mediators of cytokine, activated JAKs phosphorylate signal transducers, and activators of transcription (STAT) proteins that regulate cell differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. Aberrant JAK/STAT signaling is involved in the oncogenesis of se...
متن کاملInvestigation of the Effects of Vitamin C on Resistance to 5-FU in Colon Cancer Cells Line HT29
Introduction: There is growing evidence about the use of antioxidants to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and cancer drug resistance. Therefore, this study aimed to use vitamin C as an antioxidant and determine its effect on drug resistance in HT29 cells. Materials & Methods: During this case-control study, HT29 cells were first cultured and evaluated by MTT assay for cell death in th...

Background and aim: Lung cancer is one of the most leading causes of cancer death in males and females and the second leading cause of cancer death. Epigenetic alterations, including DNA hypermethylation, histone deacetylation, and miRNAs lead to the silencing of tumor suppressor genes (TSGs) resulting in tumorigenesis. This change has been reported in various cancers. The activity of DNA meth...

Regarding the rising rate of esophageal cancer in some parts of Asia, including northern and northeastern regions of Iran, the identification of new anti-cancer compounds is essential to combat the disease. The relation between some plants metabolites and these endophytic microorganisms are well characterized. In the current study, the potentials of Ephedra endophyte bacteria for the inhibition...

Background and aim: Colon cancer is the third most prevalent cancer in Iran. Prolonged colon inflammation is an important factor, in the development of colon cancer. Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties due to its content of [6]-gingerol and hence can play a role in the prevention of colon cancer. In this research the effects of ginger extract on reducing expression of the C...
